Companies are all in on magnetic rings in Pixel 9 cases this year https://travelrewards.me/companies-are-all-in-on-magnetic-rings-in-pixel-9-cases-this-year/ https://travelrewards.me/companies-are-all-in-on-magnetic-rings-in-pixel-9-cases-this-year/#respond Mon, 19 Aug 2024 09:09:48 +0000 https://travelrewards.me/?p=72394

Since the Pixel 9 series has again eschewed Qi2, it’s been up to the manufacturers to pick up the slack.

Google is even selling cases from Bellroy, Mous and Case-Mate in its online store that feature magnetic rings inside so you can attach Qi2 chargers and accessories to your new Pixel 9-series phone.

I’ve been a fan of Belroy’s leather cases for years, so it will take a lot for me not to buy that one for my Pixel 9 unit, and the Ruby Red one for the 9 Pro XL is really striking. The options from Mous case are super thin, so they are likely the most minimal way to add magnets to your Pixel, and they also come in the most colours.

The Case-Mate option is made of clear plastic and features a white magnetic ring that resembles the basic cases for iPhones. However, it costs only $54 in Canada, making it the cheapest magnetic case Google sells.

Other cases that work with magnetic ring chargers (MagSafe and Qi2) are Peak Design’s Everyday Case ($64.95) and Moment’s Camera case, but the Moment case is only for the Pixel 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL, not the regular Pixel 9.

Beyond that, I’ve been able to find a few more cases with magnet rings, and they’re all listed below;

Virgin joins Koodo with its own $39/50GB 4G plan https://travelrewards.me/virgin-joins-koodo-with-its-own-39-50gb-4g-plan/ https://travelrewards.me/virgin-joins-koodo-with-its-own-39-50gb-4g-plan/#respond Mon, 19 Aug 2024 09:05:53 +0000 https://travelrewards.me/?p=72388

Bell’s Virgin Plus has rushed to match Koodo’s $39/50GB plan.

Virgin updated its website Friday afternoon to remove its $44/50GB 4G plan and bump its $39/20GB 4G plan up to 50GB. That matches the $39/50GB plan Koodo launched Friday morning, though notably, Koodo’s plan requires signing up for autopay to get that price.

Virgin’s plan includes 4G data with speeds capped at 150Mbps, video streaming capped at 480p, unlimited Canada-wide and Canada-U.S. calling and international texting sent from Canada. Notably, the Canada-U.S. calling and international texting features aren’t offered by Koodo.

At the time of writing, Rogers’ Fido still had $39/20GB and $44/50GB plans. However, I suspect Fido won’t be far behind the others and will have its own $39/50GB plan soon.

As I wrote in my post about Koodo’s plan, the $39/50GB option is nice, but doesn’t really stack up to other offers available. Freedom Mobile has its $35/50GB 5G Canada/U.S./Mexico plan (after the $5 autopay discount and a $5/mo credit for 18 months), while Public Mobile has $34/50GB 4G and $39/50GB 5G Canada/U.S. plans.

You can check out Virgin’s plan here.

The sequel to Fallout Shelter is finally out, in Canada at least https://travelrewards.me/the-sequel-to-fallout-shelter-is-finally-out-in-canada-at-least/ https://travelrewards.me/the-sequel-to-fallout-shelter-is-finally-out-in-canada-at-least/#respond Mon, 19 Aug 2024 09:03:51 +0000 https://travelrewards.me/?p=72385

A new game called The Elder Scrolls: Castles is now available on iOS and Android. It takes the gameplay of the wildly popular Fallout Shelter and adds even more features alongside a medieval fantasy style.

The game has actually been in early access in certain countries like the Philippines for at least the last seven months as the company looked to iron it out and make sure it was thoroughly playtested ahead of the global launch on September 10th.

Leading up to that, it looks like Canada has been included in the playtest, and now, Canadians can download and play the game on iOS or Android for free. M-series Mac users can also play the iPad version of the game on their computer.

Like Fallout Shelter, your ultimate goal is to build a large fortress and fill it with different rooms for things like resource production, population expansion and more. At its core, these are sim management games, but Castles twists things up by also forcing you to make difficult choices to really make you feel like the ruler of your kingdom. Also, like Fallout Shelter, you can send out your subjects on missions to help you get cool loot and other resources.

The other big twist in Castles is that every real-life day, a year passes in the game, so with time moving that fast, you should be aiming to manage a dynasty of rulers rather than mostly ageless groups of people like you do in the Fallout version.

Expect more on the game over time as I play it more, but for now, you’ll have to download it and play it yourself. (iOS/Android).

New Beats Studio Pros use Kim Kardashian’s specialty colours https://travelrewards.me/new-beats-studio-pros-use-kim-kardashians-specialty-colours/ https://travelrewards.me/new-beats-studio-pros-use-kim-kardashians-specialty-colours/#respond Mon, 19 Aug 2024 09:01:58 +0000 https://travelrewards.me/?p=72382

Following 2022’s Beats Fit Pros by Kim, the audio company has released a new slate of Kardashian colours for the over-ear Beats Studio Pro headphones.

Like the Fit Pro, you can get them in Moon, Dune and Earth colours. Earth is the deep brown model that’s in my photographs. Moon is more of a pale pink/beige colour and Dune is a lighter shade of brown that is almost verging on cream. All three look really cool though, and are more on trend with their colours than the normal black and white options you get from most brands.

These headphones might be backed by Apple, but notably they work just as well on iPhone as they do on Android and Windows. Plus, to take things a step further, they’ll also charge and play audio over USB-C at the same time when plugged in, which is a nice bonus.

They’re also one of the few pairs of headphones that fold up, and they come with a pretty compact case, making them great for travel. Notably, the headphones come with matching braided USB-C and AUX cables for charging and using these with a wired connection. You can also use the USB-C to C cable to transfer audio, and the earphones have their own DAC, so they can support lossless audio this way.

In a few brief listening sessions over the past two days, I’ve been impressed with the active noise cancellation (ANC) and sound quality. Combining that with the light weight, these have been great headphones to wear for extended periods of time. The sound quality doesn’t feel as strong as what you get from the Sonos Ace, but the Beats are roughly $100 less, so I’d argue their lower price makes up for the slight discrepancy in audio quality.

The other thing that’s great about these headphones is the control panel on the right earcup. Press on the Beats logo to play/pause or press on the upper edge of the cup to push volume up and the bottom edge for volume down.

If you really like these cool Kim K colours, you can buy the new headphones from Apple or Beats for $469.

American pop star Nicole Scherzinger will be a keynote speaker at IFA, a global tech conference.

For those who don’t know Scherzinger, she was the lead singer of the iconic pop group The Pussycat Dolls, infamous for songs like ‘Don’t Cha,’ ‘Buttons,’ and ‘Wait a Minute.’

Scherzinger will address the transformation of celebrity, content creation, and philanthropy by tech on Saturday, September 7th.

The actress, singer, and philanthropist will be a speaker throughout the event. She will be joined by Mark Barrocas, CEO of Shark Ninja, Dave Reger, CEO and Founder of Neura Robotics GmbH, and others.

Telecom news roundup: Bell, Telus must provide fibre access [Aug 10-16] https://travelrewards.me/telecom-news-roundup-bell-telus-must-provide-fibre-access-aug-10-16/ https://travelrewards.me/telecom-news-roundup-bell-telus-must-provide-fibre-access-aug-10-16/#respond Mon, 19 Aug 2024 08:56:03 +0000 https://travelrewards.me/?p=72373

After a slower week, Canadian telecom was back with tons of news this week. There were several notable pricing changes, frustration over a new Rogers ad and several CRTC-related stories.

Here’s what happened in Canadian telecom this week:

Pricing and deals

Fido added unlimited calling to seven countries, including the U.S., China, India and Mexico, to its $54/60GB plan.

Koodo offered special plans to existing customers ranging from $30/60GB to $55/90GB.

Bell offered a special $45/100GB migration plan to some Virgin customers.

Several carriers are offering the Pixel 8 for $5/mo.

Koodo boosted the data on its $39/mo plan from 20GB to 50GB.

Infrastructure

Rogers partnered with SenseNet to bring wildfire detection technology to 10 communities across Alberta and B.C.

Bell and Virgin warned of service disruptions in Montreal due to a broken water main.

Legal and regulatory

The USW won an injunction against Telus that puts the company’s return-to-office mandate on hold, giving the union time to negotiate a solution with the carrier.

Bell made over $64 million off inmate calls in Ontario jails and $39 million of that went to the province as a commission.

A new ad from Rogers featuring John Krasinski faced ire from Canadian actors.

The CRTC ruled Bell and Telus must provide access to their fibre networks to competitors nationwide. The ruling was an expansion of a temporary directive from the CRTC that was released in November.

Corus accused Rogers of weaponizing its media dominance to disadvantage independents.

The Tineco Floor One S5 makes vacuuming and mopping so much more efficient https://travelrewards.me/the-tineco-floor-one-s5-makes-vacuuming-and-mopping-so-much-more-efficient/ https://travelrewards.me/the-tineco-floor-one-s5-makes-vacuuming-and-mopping-so-much-more-efficient/#respond Mon, 19 Aug 2024 08:54:13 +0000 https://travelrewards.me/?p=72370

Five years ago, Chris Evans made a viral humorous tweet bemoaning the inclusion of “smart” functionality into pretty much every new piece of technology. “You’re a major pain in all of our asses,” he quipped. As someone who similarly doesn’t care about smart features at all, it summed up my thoughts quite well. (Honestly, it was the most I will ever be able to relate to a buff millionaire.)

But the Tineco Floor One S5 2-in-1 vacuum and mop is one of the few “smart” products that I’ve really enjoyed. Using Tineco’s proprietary ‘iLoop Smart Sensor Technology,’ the device is capable of adjusting suction power, roller speed and water flow. This results in a remarkably seamless cleaning experience in which the only thing you have to worry about in the moment is rolling the product back and forth.

Now, before we go further, I should confess that I initially went into this review process a bit ignorant, as the only high-end vacuum I’ve used before was an iRobot. Therefore, I was under the assumption that you could switch between vacuum and mop functionalities at will, but instead, the Floor One S5 does both simultaneously. This means it wasn’t 100 percent useful in three flights of carpeted stairs, but ultimately, that’s my own fault for not doing more research.

It’s a worthwhile trade-off, though, since it can’t be understated how handy it is to have the dual vacuum-mop functionality going at once. On top of being pretty light to pick up and satisfyingly smooth to roll along the ground, it does a bang-up job of cleaning. In particular, I was impressed by its streak-free mopping, which Tineco says comes from its special brush head design. On the vacuum side of things, my mum felt the Floor One S5 was especially good in areas of high dust concentration, such as under her bed. (In the few instances where it didn’t immediately suck up every dust bunny, a second rollover would successfully finish the job.)

Tineco Floor One S5 display

And back to the aforementioned smart technology, the vacuum has an ‘iLoop’ full-colour LED display ring to provide real-time information to you. Here, you’ll find the battery life, as well as what cleaning mode you’re in (‘Auto’ for basic cleaning, ‘Max’ for tougher messes and ‘Suction’ mode for vacuuming liquids and other wet messes without mopping). In general, though, the Floor One S5 is efficient enough to clean on Auto; I never needed to switch to Max.

But the best part of this display is that it uses an increasingly red-coloured loop to denote especially dirty areas. It’s a clever way to show you where certain parts of your house might be especially prone to getting messy. I can see this being even more useful for people with kids or pets who leave all kinds of spillage on the ground. You can also download the free companion Tineco Life app on Android and iOS for weekly cleaning reports, volume adjustment and, mercifully, a ‘Silent’ option for the admittedly (and sometimes annoyingly) talkative automated voice.

Tineco app

Maintenance is also really simple. Said automated voice will tell you when you need to return it to the base to self-clean, and from there, you only need to empty out the dirty water tank. The noise that it makes when self-cleaning is also graciously not that loud, versus the iRobot that I used, which sounded like a jet engine when emptying its dirt bag. Removing and reattaching this tank, as well as the one on the rear for clean water and/or Tineco’s cleaning solution, is also painless.

My only real issue with the Floor One S5 is its battery life. With up to 35 minutes of cordless use, it gets through most, but not all, of my 1,700 sq. foot townhouse, and that’s removing the carpeted stairs on which I can’t use it. By the last of the four floors, we had to return it to the charging stand. For context, a full charge takes about four to five hours, although we didn’t need to wait that long, of course, to get enough juice to finish the house. Plus, the short battery usage is also more reasonable when you consider that it’s handling both vacuuming and mopping, so it still saves you time in the long run with its efficiency.

Tineco Floor One S5 rear

On the whole, my experience with the Floor One S5 has been delightful. Being able to vacuum and mop at the same time is extremely convenient, and all of the “smart” features that enable it to go back and forth between these functionalities are most welcome. While I do wish the battery life was just a tad longer, it’s a fair trade-off for a device that makes something I normally don’t enjoy doing — cleaning — that much more smooth and efficient.

You can order the Tineco Floor One S5 from Tineco’s website for $649. A special $250 discount is also available until Monday, August 19th.
